Making a campground feel like home...
We find ourselves this winter in northern Georgia, at the Battlefield campground on Battlefield blvd. Its a nice enough campground. Nice meaning it has wide clean spots with gravil. Our spot is nicely located toward the front of the campground. There are lots of dogs, which is always nice. There are alot of long termers at the park. People who work in the area and stay at the campground full time. Lots of work trucks and even a little work area that some dude set up near his camper. He has a chop saw and a couple other carpentry tools out under a temporary tent like cover. Its ok, probably a no no in the campground, but sets the tone as a *workers campground.
The facilities are decent too. Good showers, water pressure and warm water. Two in fact, different structures housing showers, toilets and sinks. I approached the registration desk the other day to inquire about extending ourselves. We are here caring for my mother and may be here longer than 30 days. The nice lady named Ginger said "no problem darling, ill put a note in your file to not rent to anyone else". Great! She asked "How long you staying?" I said I didn't know, she said "How bout til May?" Sounds good. Ill come back over in a couple weeks to square up for the next month. And so it will go. It was easy and appreciated. Feels a little like home.
With temps dropping below freezing this month, its January after all, I purchased a heated hose to simplify our water hookup situation. That also makes it feel a little more like home, not having to constantly switch off the public water due to threat of freezing in the hose.
I set up our blue outdoor lights, wrapping them around a couple trees near our camper and plugged them into the outside of our camper. Feels like home.
I tied our dog tie to a tree near our camper too and added the outdoor bed, feels a little like home. I started a fire the other night and kept it going a few days until the rain killed it. I get it going in the evening and place a large "slow burning" piece of wood before going to bed. The next morning, I can stoke the fire and get it going again. I like the am fires with coffee as much as the pm fires with beer ;). My wife calls me "the fire master". This makes it feel a little like home.
I continuously run to the local grocery store to stock up on essentials. These are milk, cookies, cereal and some chili fixings. These things make it feel more like home.
For my honey, I get cola, crackers, cheese, fruit, coffee, creamer, mashed potatoes and vanilla wafers. These things make her feel more at home.
Every night, I take our lab Jazzy on a walk around the park. I let her control the pace and direction and sometimes take her off the lease and throw things for her. This makes her feel like she is home. Walking around the campground, collecting wood, talking to other people out and about and just taking it all it. These things make the camp ground feel a little like home.
Some campers at the campground have their awnings out, some have picnic tables beneath them while others have backup propane tanks, big ones sitting outside their campers. This makes them all feel a little more like home.
